Nagaon bag title - Nuruddin Trophy- Hosts pip railmen

Guwahati, March 12: Hosts Nagaon annexed the Nuruddin Ahmed Trophy senior inter-district cricket title, defeating NF Railway by four wickets on the last day of the four-day final at Nurul Amin Stadium in Nagaon today.

Requiring 155 runs from the second essay for an outright victory, the home side resumed at overnight 14 for one th-is morning, and romped home losing six wickets in 53.5 overs.

Overnight not out batsman Amit Sinha scored a solid 74, slamming eight hits to the ropes and a six in the run chase. However, the hosts lost two quick wickets before Bhaskarjyoti Konwar (42) stepped in to share an 86-run fourth wicket partnership with Sinha till the opener was dismissed by Parvez Aziz.

Spinner Aziz claimed three wickets, including those of Konwar and Yadeen Islam, conceding 28 runs, while R.K. Yadav claimed two for 27.

On Saturday, the railmen, who had a 117-run first innings deficit, resumed at 169 for five in their second innings and were bundled out for 271. Overnight not out batsman Mrigen Talukdar played a captain?s knock of 82 runs, hammering six fours and two sixes. Deep Bora also contributed a useful 41.

The second innings also comprised 44 from the bat of Swarupam Purkayastha and 25 by Parvez Aziz. Bichitra Baruah was the pick of the Nagaon bowlers having notched four for 80 while Amit Sinha and Ranjit Mondal shared two each.

Replying to the visitors? first innings total of 154, Nagaon were all out for 271 conceding five for 28 to Parvez Aziz in their first innings. Amit Sinha topscored with 59. Ranjit Mondal (38), Rupam Kumar Das (29) and Shyam Baruah (22) were the other notable scorers for the side. Railman Gyan Prakash scalped three for 77.

The Nowgong Sports Association felicitated former Ranji skipper Syed Zakaria Zuffri during the prize distribution ceremony. Tinsukia District Sports Association president Brojen Gohain gave away the champion?s trophy and NSA secretary Pradip Hazarika presented the runners-up trophy.

The ceremony was attended by former Ranji players Rajesh Borah, Pritam Konwar, K.K. Baruah, Tapan Sarma and Dhiraj Goswami among others.

NSA president Rockybul Hussain, Assam Cricket Association president Gautam Roy and secretary Bikash Baruah congratulated the winners.
