Kohima, July 19: The horticulture sector of Nagaland holds the promise of a booming industry.

For starters, Dabur Foods Ltd has ordered 190 metric tonnes of pineapple for its popular Real fruit juice available in tetrapacks.

The pineapples will be purchased from villages in Medziphema, Jalukie and Mokokchung. Those from Medziphema in Kohima district are considered some of the best in the world.

Farmers will sell the produce through self-help groups. With organic farming a way of life here and the state announcing its new organic policy, corporates are now responding.

Dabur Foods? unit manager from Siliguri, J.S. Pathak, said the ratio of good quality fruits to the quantity available is very high in Nagaland.

The company also plans to venture into passion fruit purchases from the state.
