Modi to address NEC meet in Shillong

The Meghalaya capital is preparing to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his maiden visit here on Friday. He is scheduled to address the 65th plenary meeting of the North Eastern Council (NEC).

Shillong, May 25: The Meghalaya capital is preparing to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his maiden visit here on Friday. He is scheduled to address the 65th plenary meeting of the North Eastern Council (NEC).

The two-day meet, which will begin tomorrow, will discuss a variety of issues relating to the Northeast.

Tomorrow, the discussion will centre on Livelihood and Entrepreneurship where officials from various central ministries will interact on development projects in the region.

Ministries and departments including agriculture, rural development, food processing, textiles, North Eastern Space Applications Centre (Nesac), communications & IT, skills, tribal affairs, Ayush, medium and small-scale enterprises, commerce and department of financial services will participate in the interaction.

DoNER and youth affairs and sports minister Jitendra Singh, who is also the NEC chairman, will chair the first plenary session tomorrow.

Singh today announced through his twitter handle that the Prime Minister has consented to address the meet on Friday.

The first plenary session will include tabling of the action-taken report on the 64th plenary meeting and approval of draft annual plan of NEC, 2016-17, by the council.

Other topics to be discussed will include Northeast: Organic Capital of the Country, North Eastern Road Sector Development Scheme, Assistance for Procurement of Agriculture and Horticulture Produce, including medicinal plants, Extension of Runway at Umroi airport and others.

Moreover, there will be discussions on issues such as infrastructure and connectivity and ministries such as road transport and highways, railways, civil aviation, power, tourism and human resource development will be participating.

On the second day of the meet, various ministries and departments, including ministry of home affairs, Inland Waterways Authority of India, health and family welfare, external affairs and drinking water and sanitation will participate in the discussions.

On Friday morning, a marathon Northeast Leads the Way - Swachh Bharat Abhiyan will be flagged off from Polo Ground.

Besides addressing the NEC meet on Friday, Modi is also scheduled to address a public gathering at Polo ground.
