Guwahati, May 20: Modern English School and Gurukul Grammar Senior Secondary School posted comprehensive wins in the 7th All Assam Dhansena Sinha Memorial Inter-School Cricket Tournament at Latasil playground here today.

Modern routed DAV High School by seven wickets while Gurukul Grammar squashed the hopes of Bright Future English School with a 97-run drubbing.

Put to bat in overcast conditions, DAV were bundled out for a paltry 60 in 12.1 overs, thanks to left-arm spinner Bikash Terang’s four wickets for 11 in three overs. DAV opener Ranjan Chetri was the highest contributor with 23 off 20 balls. Suraj Yadav chipped in with 10 runs.

Offie Debasish Saikia complemented Bikash with a decisive spell of two wickets for nine to put the opposition on the back foot. Biswajit Talukdar took one for six runs.

Modern achieved their target in just 8.1 overs, losing three wickets. Abhijit Saikia with a 15-ball 28 and Joydeep Dey, who remained unbeaten on 11, steered their team to victory. For DAV, the pace trio of Amit Giri, Suraj Yadav and Ranjit Chauhan bagged a wicket each as consolation.

Bikash Terang was adjudged Man of the Match.

In the second match, Gurukul Grammar opted to bat and amassed 155 for four in 15 overs. Opener Manoj Kumar Barman’s innings of 55 off 30 balls set the stage for a run feast. His compatriot Anjan Bezbaruah, too, came to the party with a 27-run cameo.

But it was Jintu Moni Deka’s unbeaten 48 of 20 balls that took the fight out of the Bright Future bowlers.

Pace bowler Rajesh Sahani took two for 24 in three overs but off-spinner Sumit Kumar gave away as many as 47 runs in three overs that made a difference at the end of the day. Amit Kamat took one wicket but conceded 30 runs in three overs. Sumit, however, made up for his bowling debacle with a dogged 32 off 47 balls.

Siraj Khan chipped in with 12 runs while Samsad Raja was unbeaten on nine.

However, Bright Future could manage only 58 for six in their 15 overs. For Gurukul, pace bowler Hriday Nanda Barman made a hattrick in his second over to ruffle the opposition. Man of the Match Manoj Kumar Barman and Anjan Bezbaruah bagged a wicket each.
