Guwahati, March 15: Assam power minister Pradyut Bordoloi today assured the people of the state that power can be generated from the Brahmaputra by using modern technology.
At the Global Energy Conference on Opportunities in Indian Power Sector — The Critical Issues, the minister said that even though Assam does not have the advantages that are available with the hill states, it can still generate power with the use of modern technology.
He said the Northeast is a storehouse of hydropower as 70,000MW can be generated from the region every year.
Sources said the Asian Development Bank is also interested in funding the Northeast for the expansion of the power system of the North Eastern region (NER) grid.
The Project will support the government’s project on Power For All by 2012, using locally available resources including hydropower, natural gas, renewable energy sources, provision of critical transmission and distribution facilities for institutional strengthening.
