Guwahati: Assam police on Sunday questioned five office-bearers of the Delhi Action Committee for Assam on its meeting in New Delhi on November 13 where Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind president Maulana Syed Arshad Madani allegedly made inflammatory comments in connection with the National Register of Citizens (NRC) update.

A team, led by assistant commissioner of police Pranjal Bora, questioned Bonojit Hussain, Amrapali Basumatary, Rupam Kalita, Biswajit Bora and Samudra Gogoi in New Delhi on Sunday. "Documents related to the Public Meeting on Current Political Impasse in Assam: Updating the NRC and the Question of Citizenship held at Constitution Club of India were seized from them," a police source said.

Five cases were registered in different police stations in Assam against Madani for allegedly "promoting enmity between communities".

The police team, which reached New Delhi on Friday, earlier questioned Madani and his aide Fazlul Rehman Qasimi. Many documents related to the meeting were seized by the police from the Jamiat office and the club, which include a letter written by former Rajya Sabha member Kuldip Nayar to the Lok Sabha Speaker on October 31 for allotment of the speaker hall of the club for the meeting.

The source said from preliminary investigation it appeared that Jamiat had funded the meeting, which was attended by intellectual Hiren Gohain, veteran journalist Haider Hussain, former North East Hill University professor Apurba Kumar Barua and journalist Manjit Mahanta, among others. The police earlier questioned Hussain and Mahanta in Guwahati.

Prabajan Virodhi Manch, a forum against infiltration, convener Upamanyu Hazarika on Sunday condemned Madani for his comments. Asom Miya (Asomiya) Parishad in Dhubri said Madani was a religious leader and should not speak like a political leader. In Dibrugarh, the All Assam Bengali Youth Students' Federation appealed the government to stop harassing genuine citizens during the NRC update process.
