Agartala, Sept. 24: The football season in Tripura has entered its last leg with MBB College of Agartala winning the inter-college football championship, which is among the closing tournaments in the calendar, defeating hosts Amarpur Government Degree College 5-3 in a penalty shootout.
The final of the tournament, revived this year after a long gap, in the sub-divisional town of Amarpur, ended goalless after 120 minutes of field action, much to the disappointment of a capacity crowd of 10,000.
The match began with both teams firing on all cylinders from the whistle, but the eventual champions missing two opportunities to draw blood in the 15th and 20th minutes. MBB College strikers Ranjit Shil and Khokan Reang failed to score from hand-shaking distance.
Unleashing a barrage of counter-attacks, Amarpur College came close to finding the net twice in the 31st and 39th minutes but strikers Nayan Singh Jamatya and Akhil Uchoi fumbled in front of the goal.
The excitement of the first half degenerated into dull midfield exchanges after the breather for nearly 20 minutes.
MBB College missed three consecutive chances in the dying moments of the stipulated 90 minutes of the game.
Thirty minutes of extra time also failed to yield any result, though the hosts, goaded by the vociferous fans, tried in vain to find the elusive golden goal.
In the shootout, Biswajit Dipankar Deb, Biswajit Debbarma, Dhilon Debbarma, Paltu Datta and Suddhodhan Sangma scored for MBB College.
Only three players — Shashi Jamatya, Chandan Saha and Subarna Tripura — from the Amarpur side could find the net in the shootout.
