Oct. 27: Violence against women took the worst possible turn when a postal department employee allegedly hacked his wife to death late last night.
Police said 37-year-old Samsul Zaman attacked his wife Nazima Ahmed, 30, with a sharp weapon after an altercation at the couple’s rented house in Mathura Nagar near Down Town Hospital.
Nazima, a housewife, received severe injuries in her face. She died on the spot.
The man was arrested and a case under Section 302 IPC registered against him with Dispur police station.
The suspect, an employee of postal department, was an accountant with the general post office.
Though the police are yet to ascertain the motive behind the crime, the murder is suspected to be the fall-out of a property dispute.
“They were married about eight years ago. They were separated for about two years before getting back together again only six months back,” police said.
From preliminary investigations it came to light that Nazima was constantly under pressure from Zaman who would ask her to persuade her parents to provide him a plot of land.
“There have been allegations that he used to torture her both physically and mentally. We are probing the veracity of these charges,” the police officer said.
The victim was the daughter of Helaluddin Ahmed.
The police said Zaman had returned from his native place Juria in Nagaon district only yesterday after celebrating Id-ul-Fitr.
He will be produced in court tomorrow.
