Dibrugarh, March 11: Margherita District Sports Association defeated Udayan Coaching Centre, Lumding by a thin margin of six runs to sneak into the semifinals of the All-Assam Sashidhar Gogoi and Binod Chetry memorial invitation cricket tournament.
The tournament was organised by the Tinsukia Cricket Academy and played at the Tinsukia District Sports Association playground.
In the 40-over-a-side match, Margherita won the toss and decided to bat first.
The team managed to score 136, losing nine wickets in the stipulated overs.
Sudip Roy, with 41 runs off 65 balls, including a sixer, and Ritumoni Buragohain (16), were the notable scorers for the team.
For the Lumding side, medium pacer Soumen Sarkar was the pick of the bowlers, claiming four wickets for 22, while Gautam Dey notched a couple of wickets for 18 runs.
In their run chase, Lumding were all out for 130 in 32 overs, falling six runs short of the target.
Ashish Deb, with 29 runs off 39 balls and Soumen Sarkar with 22 off 42 balls, were the main contributors to the team’s scoreboard.
Sudip Roy of Margherita, who earlier topscored for his team, also came back strongly with the ball. The medium pacer picked up three wickets for 13, bagging the Man of the Match award.
Bidyut Goswami took three for 11 and Raja Deb picked two for 35.
In the inaugural match played on Saturday, Tinsukia Railways defeated Duliajan Cricket Academy by a huge margin of 187 runs.
Tinsukia Cricket Academy will take on Tinsukia XI on Tuesday.
