Silchar: The founder-president of the All Cachar Karimganj Hailakandi Students' Association (ACKHSA), Pradip Dutta Roy, on Wednesday slammed West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee for allegedly making "inflammatory" remarks on the NRC issue.
On Tuesday, Mamata had said the NRC exercise in Assam was done with a "political motive" and it would lead to civil war in the country.
Roy told reporters at a news conference that the entire NRC process is being done under the supervision of the Supreme Court and Mamata should not have passed judgment.
He alleged that Mamata was trying to create unrest in Assam and divide people.
"Who is she to make comments on the issue? Where was she for so long? Why is she feeling the need to interfere all of a sudden?" Roy asked.
He also slammed the West Bengal government for not sending a large number of documents sent for verification from the NRC offices in Assam as part of the NRC update process.
Roy also sought intervention of Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal in connection with alleged harassment of a large number of people by vigilantes led by the Khasi Students' Union (KSU) along the Assam-Meghalaya border on Tuesday.
The KSU members allegedly forced people out of private and commercial vehicles, demanded proof for inclusion in the NRC and even manhandled some people.
Silchar legislator Dilip Kumar Paul told The Telegraph over phone on Wednesday afternoon that the NRC process is being conducted under the complete control of the Supreme Court and the government did not have any role to play in it.
"Mamata has no knowledge about the NRC at all. Ignorance is the reason behind her remarks," he said.
