June 13: Jazz and Western classical music lovers here are in for a treat on Saturday, as three boys from the region display their musical skills at ITA cultural complex at Machkhowa.
The trio — Ronojit Chaliha, 16, Amarnath Hazarika, 26, and Adiel Massar, 17 — have received training in western classical and jazz instruments from different parts of the world.
The event, ClassiJazz, will feature Western classical music by composers of different musical periods — starting from Baroque of the late 17th and early 18th century to romantic and classical to, finally, modern 20th century music. It will also feature jazz standards made by influential composers from North and South America.
Talking to reporters, the event’s organiser, Debajit Chaliha, said a notable feature of the show would be a rendition using Western musical instruments of the Assamese anthem Mor Aponar Dex composed by Lakshminath Bezbaruah. “The rendition of this composition on Western instruments such as the piano, cello and guitar will be unique. We hope it will prompt Western musicians to perform more eastern or Assamese compositions,” he said.
Chaliha said the event was an attempt to show the prowess of the three local musicians in performing on instruments outside their own culture and to encourage budding musicians to follow their path. “It also aims to draw attention of music teachers worldwide to notice the talent inherent in this part of the world and eventually provide them an opportunity to showcase their skills in the global arena,” he said.
The two-hour show will start at 6pm.
Amongst the trio who will perform in the event, Ronojit is a Class IX student at National Open School and Adiel is a Class XI student in St Anthony’s College in Shillong.
Ronojit showed his love for the piano at the age of three. In 2002, he was introduced to musician Neil Nongkynrih, who took him under his wing. Under Neil’s tutelage, he was exposed to a vast repertoire in classical music. Ronojit now trains under Roxane A. Doctor in Pune and continues his quest for musical excellence in both Western classical and jazz styles. This is his debut performance in Guwahati.
Amarnath is a composer and guitarist whose music spans an eclectic mix of sounds from contemporary jazz to urban soul. He moved to Boston in 2007 to attend Berklee College of Music, graduating in two years with a bachelor’s degree in jazz composition.
Adiel, on the other hand, first learnt to play the cello with Austrian cellist Eva Itzlinger, who briefly coached him for three weeks. His passion for music spans both Western classical and jazz.
