Tura, Aug. 29: A higher secondary school in West Garo Hills today held a lottery, with the winner going home in a new Hyundai Eon car.

Meghalaya Speaker Abu Taher Mondal, who was present during the draw, is president of the management committee of J.N. Higher Secondary School, Phulbari.

"There is always a requirement for better infrastructure and improved standard of the school. Its science laboratory needs to be extended.

"The idea of a lottery was the brainchild of well-wishers of the school. The proceeds will be spent completely on development of the school, especially its laboratory," Mondal said.

People from across Assam and Meghalaya bought lottery tickets to try their luck as well as contribute to the cause of children's education.

"We had 21 students who passed in the first division. It shows how well we are progressing. A lot more needs to be done and we have just started. We want to empower our children with the best tools for a brighter future. There should not be cases of missed opportunities as had happened in the past," Mondal said.

"I bought 30 tickets worth Rs 15,000. Though I haven't won, I am happy to be able to contribute for a cause," said Rabi Mondal, a resident of Phulbari.

A few years back, a building grant worth Rs 45 lakh was provided to the school for the development of the laboratory. However, the contractor allegedly siphoned off the money. The same contractor was jailed for three months for the discrepancy and the case is still on.

"It was a setback and thus the need for developing the laboratory and the need for funds arose," Mondal said.

The lottery was held in front of a huge gathering and 11 lucky winners took home prizes that ranged from bikes to refrigerators. The car was the icing on the cake. "We are thankful for everyone's contribution to the cause and hope their good wishes will be with us in the future," said Mondal.
