Guwahati, July 14: Atul Barman, 35, a farmer and trader of Paikarkuchi village in Assam's Nalbari district, nearly 80km from here, was electrocuted this morning after coming into contact with a live wire near his house.

The police said Barman was critically injured while trying to connect a water pump around 6.30am.

He was rushed to the Swahid Mukunda Kakati civil hospital at the district headquarters of Nalbari, but was declared brought dead.

He is survived by his wife and a seven-year-old son.

Nearly 21 people have been electrocuted in Assam in the past month. This includes at least eight flood and waterlogging-related electrocutions.

An official of the Nalbari disaster management authority, Hemanta Baishya, told The Telegraph, "We are conducting an investigation into the incident. As it happened at a private residence, we have to carry out a proper investigation before recommending him for any kind of ex gratia."

According to the DDMA, the district now has one lakh flood-affected people and 44 submerged villages.

"According to today's flood report, the situation is grim only in the Barkhetri revenue circle, very near the Brahmaputra. The river is flowing at 44 metres and its danger level is 43 metres. The water levels of the other rivers have receded over the past two days and they are flowing below the danger level," said Baishya.

He added that all arrangements have been made to provide relief to the flood victims. No casualty has been reported so far.
