Guwahati, April 4: Grandmaster R.R. Laxman and Woman Grandmaster Mary Ann Gomes continued to lead the field today along with International Masters Himanshu Sharma, B.T. Muralikrishnan, Atanu Lahiri and former champion Arindam Mukherjee with four points per head after the fourth round of the 4th Jugal Kishore Newatia Open International Rating Tournament, organised by Lions Kamarupa Club, at Terapanth Bhawan here.
On the top board, Laxman defeated Chandigarh opponent Himal Gusain with white pieces.
Fide master Diptayan Ghosh held second seed GM Sriram Jha to a draw.
The Bengal youngster played 47 moves before signing the peace treaty.
Gomes gave no chance to her unrated Nepal opponent Suman Shreshtha and beat him with black pieces.
Himanshu Sharma beat Manipur boy Rajkumar Appolosana with a Ruy Lopez opening. Muralikrishanan beat Hemal Karsanji Thanki of Gujarat and Lahiri accounted for Woman Fide Master Swati Mohta.
IM G.B. Prakash survived some anxious moments against Meghalaya opponent H.D. Sutnga and offered him a draw but Sutnga played on for a win and eventually lost the game after 66 moves.
Arindam Mukherjee beat Nepal man Niraj Narual to be in joint lead with the GMs and IMs with four points.
Sriram Jha, Diptayan Ghosh, IM Akshayraj Kore, IM Suvrajit Saha, former champion Arjun Tiwari, Santu Mandal, Amardeep Bartakke, Naveen Hegde, Rajib Dhar, Naveen Tandukar and Subir Lama were in second place with 3.5 points on completion of the fourth round.
Santu Mandal held Aksayraj Kore to a draw and Saha was held to another draw by Bartakke. Hegde, too, held Tiwari to a draw.
Assam boy Rajib Dhar beat Subrata Baishnab, who is also from Assam, and Naveen Tandukar got the better of Swaraj Palit. Subir Lama accounted for D.K. Chopra. Dhar, Madhab Sarma, Nandan Buragohain, Mausam Kalita, Dangmei Bosco, Abdus Sidique and Mahasweta Kumar are leading the challenge from Assam.
Madhab outwitted Satabdajit Baruah, Buragohain eased past Biswajit Das, Mausam Kalita got the better of Aminjyoti Dehingia, Dangmei Bosco prevailed over Chiraranjan Bhuyan, Abdus Sidique defeated Dimbeswar Taye and Mahasweta Kumar accounted for Prakash Nepal to score three points per head from four rounds.

Bersrang Narzary bagged two gold medals for Assam in the Junior National Archery Championship held in Jharkhand last week says our staff reporter in Guwahati .
Narzary won the gold in the 40-metre Indian round and Olympic round events. Bichitra Mushahary won a silver in the 30-metre Indian round while the girls’ team of Chritina Medhi, Gohela Muchahary, Mausumi Basumatary and Bichitra Mushahary tallied a bronze in the Indian round team event.
