Guwahati, July 1: Kushal Bharat Bagadia emerged champion, scoring 6.5 points from the seven-round Swiss League open event in the Brahamadutta Sarma Bordoloi Guwahati Chess Championship, organised by Guwahati Chess Association, that concluded at Shilpgram here today.
Satyabrat Handique tallied five points and clinched the second position.
Lachit Boro and Nirmal Jyoti Sarma also tallied five points each but were declared third and fourth respectively on the basis of tiebreak scores.
Sudeshna Sarma emerged the women’s champion tallying 4.5 points from five rounds while Atlanta Mahanta finished second with 3.5 points.
Lily Phukan also tallied 3.5 points and was named third on the basis of tiebreak scores.
Kunjalata Das tallied one point to be placed fourth.
Ravikant Tiwari, Debashish Borpujari and Chiranjeet Boro were ranked first, second and third respectively in under-19 boys’ event. Tiwari tallied two points while Borpujari scored 1.5 and Boro one point.
Prateeti Baruah emerged the under-19 girls’ champion and Bishakha Bora second tallying 2.5 points each.
Debanga Koushik Bhattacharyya and Shreya Banik became the under-17 boys’ and girls’ champions respectively. Bhattacharyya tallied 1.5 points and Banik 3.5 points.
Anubhav Deva Sarma scored five points of six from as many rounds in under-15 event to clinch the champion’s title. Rishav Deuri also scored five points in this age group and finished second on the basis of tiebreak scores. Ashrant Tewari and Aryaman Tewari scored 4.5 and four points respectively to be placed third and fourth respectively.
In under-13 event, Shivangini Bhattacharyya scored five points from six rounds to be the champion. Prasurjya Das scored 4.5 points to be placed second.
Amlan Mahanta scored four points for the third place and Prachurjya Gayan 3.5 points for the fourth position.
In under-11 category, Aryan Sonowal scored five points from five rounds to become the unbeaten champion. Jigyashdipta Gogoi scored 3.5 points for the second position while Mrityunjoy Kumar Deb and Kunal Kalita scored three points each to be placed third and fourth respectively.
In under-9 category, Manthan Kashyap Datta became the champion with six points from six rounds. Prithwis Das scored five points to be placed second while Ahiran Rinav Sarma and Rishita Sinha tallied four and three points respectively to finish third and fourth respectively.
In under-7, Akanksha Das became the champion with 3.5 points while Sulaksana Sarma scored half a point and got second position.
Dwizomoni Singh won the title in the veterans’ event with 2.5 points. Umesh Chandra Phukan finished second with 1.5 points. Shankar Sarma also scored 1.5 points but was placed third while Soroj Lal Deb was placed fourth with .5 points.
School chess
Giant killer Ravikant Tiwari caused another upset on the second day of the All Guwahati Children Chess Championship, which is under way at Bhabendranath Saikia Children Welfare Trust here.
Tiwari, who shocked second seed Natasha Dutta on the inaugural day yesterday, today toppled top seed Kaustav Kashyap Das in the sixth round.
Das was also held to a draw by eighth seed Fide-rated player Priyambada Dutta who showed immense tactical wit to hold the top seed even.
After end of the sixth round, Tiwari is in sole lead with 5.5 points while Debanga K. Bhattacharyya, Suraj Dey and Nitish Das are tied in the 2nd place with five points per head.
The final round games will be played at 3pm tomorrow and tough battle is expected on all the top boards.
Altogether 57 students from the city are participating in the seven-round Swiss League tournament.
