Kalidas, Sonia lift gold

Guwahati, Feb. 17: Railway man R. Kalidas and N.G. Sonia Chanu of police services bagged a gold each in their respective events today in the 57th men and 20th women senior national weightlifting championship under way at Ganesh Mandir indoor stadium here.

Kalidas lifted a total weight of 282.5 kg that included 122.5 kg in snatch and 160 kg in jerk to clinch the gold in men?s below-69 kg weight group ahead of G. Vedivelu of SSCB.

The latter lifted 280 kg with 122.5 kg in snatch and 157.5 kg in jerk for the silver.

Rajkumar Gupta of Delhi had to be content with the bronze, lifting 270 kg (125 kg in snatch and 145 kg in jerk).

In women?s below-53 kg category, Chanu lifted 80 kg in snatch, 105 kg in jerk for the gold. A. Kalyani of Andhra Pradesh bagged the silver, lifting 167.5 kg, which included 70 kg in snatch and 97.5 kg in jerk.

Rupa Saha of West Bengal managed 70 kg in snatch and 90 kg in jerk, totalling 160 kg for the bronze.

Last night, A.K. Pandian of railways annexed the men?s below-62 kg class gold, lifting 260 kg (115 kg in snatch and 145 kg in jerk). V. Biju of SSCB and V. Velu of Tamil Nadu won the silver and bronze, lifting 252.5 kg and 250 kg respectively.
