Agartala, Jan. 9: The Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) has alleged largescale irregularities in the voters? list for the forthcoming elections to village committees under the Autonomous District Council (ADC) areas.
Addressing a press conference today, INPT general secretary Rabindra Debbarma said the Left Front government and the state election commission have ?totally doctored? the voters? list for the village committee polls to ?win the elections through the backdoor?.
?The names of more than 40 per cent of our supporters and voters have been deleted from the electoral roll,? said Debbarma.
He said the state election commission urged by the Left Front government, had deliberately refrained from making a summary revision of voters? list on January 1 this year.
?This is the law all over the country. But it has been violated in Tripura and as a result 45,000 new voters have been kept out of the voters? list,? Debbarma said, adding that draft rolls published on January 4 had been prepared on the basis of intensive revision conducted last year.
Debbarma said the INPT would not accept this lying down but launch an agitation to plug loopholes in the electoral roll.
Referring to forming an alliance with the Congress for the village committee polls, Debbarma said an alliance at the state level was unlikely to be reached. ?There may be seat adjustments at the local level but no formal alliance will be possibleat the state level,? Debbarma said.
He lashed out at the state government for indulging in largescale irregularities in delimitation of constituencies.
For village committees. ?The delimitation has been done in such a manner that the CPM can derive undue benefits from it,? Debbarma alleged.
Elections to the 527 village committees, counterparts of the three-tier panchayat structure, would be crucial to the ADC and play a vital role in development at the grassroots level, he added.
Debbarma said the INPT would do well in the elections likely to be held in February this year and win at least 100 gaon sabhas.
