The Assam Rifles personnel donated clothing and sports goods to the inmates of the Pherima Rehabilitation Centre at a function organised under the aegis of the headquarters, Inspector-General Assam Rifles (north) and headquarters 5 Sector Assam Rifles by 42 Assam Rifles at Medziphema.
Equipment for sports like football, volleyball, carom, chess and Chinese checkers were also gifted to the centre.
Many prominent personalities from Pherima village, including village council chairman, gaonburas (headmen) and representatives from local women and youth organisations attended the function. The village council appreciated the goodwill gesture by Assam Rifles and hoped that their cordial relationship would be strengthened in future.
School facelift
The Heraka Hindu School at Tening is sporting a new look, thanks to the efforts of the 28th battalion of Assam Rifles. The project was carried out under the aegis of Headquarters, 5 Sector Assam Rifles and HQ Inspector-General of Assam Rifles (North).
The school building was extended and renovated as a military civic action (MCA) project by 28 Assam Rifles, following requests from the school administration. The renovated and extended two-storeyed building was inaugurated on July 27. A cultural programme and presentations were organised by students of the school on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, 28 Assam Rifles assistant commandant H.B. Pradhan said the children were the hope of a nation. He said Assam Rifles was happy to be associated with projects aimed at upgrading the facilities for children and youths in Nagaland.
The village committee members, village heads and the school staff thanked the Assam Rifles for its assistance and support in renovating the school. The school now has a new floor with three classrooms.
Memorial
The Jaswant Garh Memorial was raised in memory of Rifleman Jaswant Singh, Mahavir Chakra (posthumous) of 4 Garhwal Rifles.
In the battle of Nuranang in 1962, during the Chinese aggression, Singh displayed unmatched valour by holding the invaders for 72 hours, before he met his end.
Jaswant Singh’s relatives visited his memorial recently. They included his sister Rajeshwari Negi, his brother-in-law K.S. Negi and four others, who laid a wreath at the memorial.
The scene turned emotional as they paid tribute to the martyr with a heart filled with the pride of having a brother like braveheart Singh. It was a proud moment for them and soldiers of 5 Mountain division.
A small excursion was also arranged for the relatives at the picturesque Jang falls.
The visit was organised by the Ball of Fire Division and the relatives were deeply touched by the honour bestowed on Jaswant Singh and the excellent arrangements made for their visit.
