Guwahati, March 7: The department of design at the IIT, Guwahati, will organise an exhibition of cane and bamboo furniture at Guwahati Press Club on March 10.

The exhibition, which will be on till March 13 between 11 and 7 pm, has been titled “Agoli-Bah: Design for Rural Needs”.

It is part of the design development project funded by the United Nations Development Project. The IIT’s department of design is the first to offer an undergraduate programme in product and communication design.

Officials said while other projects focused on developing crafts that explore the potential of marketing in urban markets and new developments of hand tools that aid the craft worker, this project focused on developing utilitarian furniture for schools and primary health centres in villages. “This is a unique initiative and addresses local needs,” an official said.
