Hosts Jorhat lift cricket trophy

Guwahati, Feb. 12: Hosts Jorhat annexed the title in the Khakan Ahmed trophy inter-district school (under-19) cricket meet that concluded at Jorhat Stadium today.

The home side defeated Nagaon by 89 runs in the 35-over-an-innings final today.

Jorhat elected to bat and posted 203 losing all the wickets in the stipulated 35 overs and later bundled out the Nagaon boys for 114 in 26 overs.

Nayanmani Bharali topscored for Jorhat with 55 off 63 balls while Parives Swami blasted the visiting bowlers across the stadium to score 47 off only 21 balls. Suraj Mohan Konwar and Rizvi Afroz chip-ped in 34 and 21 respectively.

Yaseenul Haque and Birendra Das of Nagaon shared two wickets each, conceding 39 and 22 runs respectively. For Nagaon, Bishnu Prasad Das topscored with 24 and Biplab Choudhury (11) was the only other notable contributor.

The Jorhat bowlers conceded 44 runs as extras. Parthiv Hazarika of Jorhat scalped three wickets giving away 27 runs while Dadul Bora and Pargat Bora shared two each, conceding 27 and three runs respectively.

Jorhat entered the final defeating Barpeta by 11 runs and Nagaon got the better of Kamrup (Rural) by five wickets in the two semifinals yesterday.

In the first semifinal, Kamrup (Rural) were restricted to 95 for eight in the stipulated 25 overs with Tenzing scoring 28. In reply, Nagaon reached 96 for five in 20.5 overs. Robin Das scored 20 and Amar Choudhury captured two for 20.

Later, Jorhat batted first and were all out for 143 in 25 overs with Parives Swami scoring 30. Bipul Kanta Das of Barpeta notched three for 21. Barpeta were restricted to 132 for seven in 25 overs with Manoj Bayan scoring 35.

Parives Swami was named player of the tournament and got a cash award of Rs 2,000 sponsored by the family members of Khakan Ahmed.

The meet, organised by the Assam Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare, was revived after a gap of 15 years.
