Agartala: The Congress will form the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) III government after 2019 Lok Sabha elections, veteran Congress leader Gopal Chandra Roy has said in a news conference here on Sunday morning.

Roy said the BJP is losing support and results of the Assembly and Lok Sabha byelections have proved that the Congress is making a comeback.

Roy said secular political parties are joining hands across India against the BJP's "divisive politics" and urged them to unite in Tripura also.

"The Modi government will not be in power after the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and a UPA III government will be formed," he said.

The Congress demanded that the ruling BJP fulfil all promises made in its vision document in the next budget session of the Assembly and warned of a statewide agitation if the assurances are not reflected in the budget.

Taking a cue from the CPM, he said: "Centrally-sponsored schemes have been stopped. Thousands have left the state in search of jobs. There is near-starvation situation in rural hamlets and people have fled to Bangladesh."

Tripura Congress vice-president Tapas De said the BJP and its alliance partner Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) came to power through false promises.

The Opposition party leaders on Sunday demanded immediate withdrawal of Rs 15 VAT on petrol and Rs 10 VAT on diesel.
