Tinsukia: Wang Hing Hua, 62, and his brother Wang Shing Tung, 61, were shocked to find the names of only five of their 13 family members in the final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The Wang brothers, who run the Hong Kong restaurant and Ken's Kitchen in Tinsukia, are the fifth generation Assamese-Chinese whose grandfather came to India during the British rule. Hing Hua was born in Shillong and Shing Tung in Tinsukia, in late 1950's.

Talking to The Telegraph, Hing Hua said, "My grandfather, who owned a shop at Daily Bazar, lived here before India got its Independence. We had submitted documents dating much before 1971, including land documents, saw mill papers and documents from the deputy commissioner's office. I fail to understand the reason for the omission of the names of most of our family members from the final draft."

"The documents were verified, still, so many names are left out. Isn't this harassment?" asked Hing Hua and said, "I will be going to the NRC Seva Kendra on August 7 to ask the reason for dropping the names of our family members."

"The struggle is far from over to prove that we are Indians. The system is not good, perhaps. How many times are we supposed to go for the same thing, leaving behind all the work?"

The family was taken to Rajasthan in 1962 during the Sino-Indian border conflict.

"My father, who is no more, was a teacher in a Chinese school at Makum then, before we were taken to Rajasthan as prisoners of war in 1962," Hing Hua said.

"The names of my mother Li Suchen, 91, the head of the family, my grandson Lenshan Wang, 4, the youngest in the family, are among the eight members whose names have been left out. The remaining include me, my elder brother, his wife and three children," Shing Tung said.

"The names of my wife Luies Wang, son Tian Ann Wang, two daughters - Shiulian Wang and Shiyu Lian Wang - and daughter-in-law, Jayshree Gogoi, have appeared in the final draft."

Shing Tung said, "The politicians are saying there is nothing to worry about. But if the names of all the members of my family were included in the list, it would have been a great relief."
