Guwahati lift champions' trophy

Mangaldoi, Feb. 7: Guwahati lifted the J.K. Baruah Trophy Inter-District (under-19) Cricket tournament trophy, defeating Hailakandi by virtue of a first innings lead in the two-day final at Mangaldoi Stadium here today.

Chasing Guwahati’s first innings total of 329, scored yesterday, Hailakandi were bundled out for 134 in 51.4 overs in their first innings today.

In the second innings, Guwahati, who led by 195 runs in the first innings, were 74 for one in 18 overs at close of play.

Guwahati paceman Kon Urang was the demolition man, having hauled six for 47.

N. Kiran Kumar picked up the remaining four wickets for 16 runs. Nahush Yadav topscored for Hailakandi with 39 runs (4x4, 6x1) facing 58 balls while Gautam Poddar (25, 4x4) and Rajesh Nath (26, 4x4) were the other notable scorers for the side.

For Guwahati, in their second innings, Amit Singh and Sanjow Brahma were batting on 43 (4x8) and 12 (4x2) respectively when stumps were drawn.

Rajesh Nath of Hailakandi claimed the only wicket for 16 runs.

Urang was adjudged the Man of the Match and his teammate Ambar Bhattacharya was named the Man of the Tournament.

The joint secretary of the Guwahati Sports Association, Nabab Ali, former cricketer Ramit Paul, former MLAs Basanta Das and Kartik Sarkar among others gave away the prizes.
