Guwahati, May 27: Guwahati FC is all set for their first endeavour with the Assam State Premier League with the club launching its team here today.
The club came into existence after Sanjive Narain, one of the co-owners of ISL franchise Northeast United FC, pulled out last year. Guwahati FC was launched in December last year and the side will make their way into the pitch for the first time in the ASPL commencing on May 29.
"Finally, Guwahati FC will play their first match against Tezpur United in Tezpur on May 30. We have appointed Anxo Valcarcel, a Spanish professional coach with over 19 years of experience, as the team coach. He is a UEFA A licensed coach and has been associated with some illustrious clubs, including Real Madrid, RC Deportivo De La Coruna and Real Club Celta De Vigo," said Narain, co-owner of Guwahati FC.
In addition, the club also unveiled its logo, which features the one-horned rhino and a football as well as their home and away jerseys.
The side also announced the signing of their key players, including the likes of foreign recruits ND Opera and Adekoye Babatund along with Rahul Boro, Ashish Chettri and Mobin Rai.
"Our main target is the I-League and it has become a prestige issue for us now. Despite being a large state compared to some of the other states in the region, we haven't been able to make it to the country's top tier. Our aim is to set up a professionally managed and successful football club that will work for the development of the game in the state as well as put the state on the national and international football maps," said Narain.
Valcarcel said, "Passion for the sport as well as youth talent is abundant in the region and I am sure with the right guidance and dedication, the club can attain great heights."
