GMC staff demand salaries

The employees of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) have sought the release of their salaries before Diwali and Id festivals. The four employees? union at the corporation jointly submitted a memorandum to mayor Nilakshi Talukdar in this regard on Thursday.

Gun scare

A gun hanging from a tree near the headquarters of the special branch of Assam police at Kahilipara sparked panic in the area on Thursday morning. However, on closer examination it was found to be a toy.

ISI agent

The court of the chief judicial magistrate, Kamrup, on Thursday remanded ISI agent Zabibullah Ansari in judicial custody. Ansari had been recently arrested by a special operation unit of the special branch of Assam police from Darrangamela on the Indo-Bhutan border.

Fund raiser

The All Guwahati Students? Union and the Marwari Yuba Mancha has decided to launch a joint drive to raise funds for relief and rehabilitation of the victims of the Karbi Anglong violence.

Contests

The Assam branch of the Indian Council for Child Welfare will organise a quiz and debate for schoolchildren of greater Guwahati on October 30 at Kamrup Academy. The quiz is open for students of Classes VIII-X while the debate will be for students of Classes XI-XII.

Book release

A book on dental diseases and their treatment, written by assistant professor of Regional Dental College Swarga Jyoti Das, was released by former vice-chancellor of Gauhati University N.K. Choudhury recently.

Foundation day

The Birubari branch of Asam Sahitya Sabha recently observed its foundation day at the Birubari-Roopnagar School. A seminar on education was also organised to mark the occasion.

Savings

A state-level function on the occasion of World Thrift Day will be organised by the National Savings Institute, under the Union finance ministry, at the deputy commissioner?s office on Friday.
