Agitation against vacant govt posts

The Assam Association of the Deaf on Tuesday threatened to launch agitation programmes if its demands, particularly filling up vacant posts in government departments, are not met immediately by the government. The final decision will be taken at a meeting on Saturday. he association demanded an inquiry into the incident of police lathicharge on blind students when they put up a road blockade in Guwahati against non-fulfilment of their demands on Monday.

Minister assures Cottonians

Assam education minister Ripun Bora on Tuesday held a meeting with representatives of the Cotton College Union Society. He assured the union that their demands, including converting the college into a deemed university, appointment of a full time principal, filling up vacancies of grade III and IV employees and renovation of hostels, would be fulfilled.

Karbi textbooks

A delegation of the Karbi Sahitya Sabha met chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday and submitted a memorandum demanding regular supply of textbooks to schools and appointing teachers of Karbi language.

Assam floods

The flood situation in Upper Assam remained unchanged on Tuesday. The water level of the Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level in Jorhat and Dibrugarh districts. Road links at several places of the two districts are still disrupted.

Training

Don Bosco Institute, Kharguli, will organise a three-day training on counselling for schoolteachers from August 10 at the institute. The training will focus on how to enable teachers to counsel students on various problems they face in their academic and personal lives.

Encephalitis

Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi has asked his officer on special duty Satyen Bora to visit Titabor on Wednesday to inquire into cases of encephalitis. Four persons have died of encephalitis in Behajan and Chungi areas. Bora will submit a report after he visits the areas.

Seminar

A seminar will be held on Thursday at Hotel Landmark on oral rehydrated solution. The seminar has been organised by the Assam branch of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics.

CA coaching

The Guwahati branch of the Eastern India Regional Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India will start coaching students for CA from August 1. Students may contact the branch office of the institute in Ambari in Guwahati.

State-level camp

A four-day state-level camp of the Seva Dal instructors was inaugurated on Tuesday in Guwahati by PCC president Bhubaneswar Kalita.

Energy park

An energy park will be inaugurated on August 20 to mark the birth annive-rsary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi at Sankaradeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati.

Contraband

Contraband totalling over Rs 5 lakh was seized by the BSF near Lankamura border outpost in West Tripura district on Tuesday.
