States on peace mission

A meeting was held at the Assam secretariat in Dispur on Monday on the Karbi-Khasi imbroglio. The Assam and Meghalaya governments have decided to work towards ensuring the security of life and property of the Khasis and Pnars living in Assam and Karbis living in Meghalaya. epresentatives of both governments decided to constitute a peace committee at the level of the district councils to ensure peace in their respective areas.

Man arrested

Chandmari police on Monday arrested Nizamuddin, alias Tinku, from Barpeta Road, on the charge of setting his wife, Absa Khatoon, on fire at their Gandhibasti residence on Thursday.

IIT course

The department of humanities and social sciences of IIT Guwahati introduced a four-week course on theory and praxis on Monday.

Medical camp

A multi-speciality medical camp was organised at the SOS Children?s village on Monday. About 900 people from Azara, Garal, Mirzapur and Dharapur attended the camp.

New panel

A special general body meeting of the Chandmari Unnayan Samity was held recently. A 17-member committee was formed with retired IFS officer Manmohan Chandra Barua as president and Ashok Jyoti Sarma as general secretary.

GMC rapped

Residents of Lachit Nagar have lambasted the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) for its failure to clear the clogged drains of the locality. They said that despite the tall claims made the ruling Congress, the GMC has not cleared the drains in six months.

Fare protest

The city unit of the AJYCP has submitted a memorandum to deputy commissioner of Kamrup (metropolitan) district Samir Kumar Sinha demanding a rollback on private bus fare hike.

Art contest

An all-Assam painting competition was organised at the Guwahati Refinery Complex recently. Over a hundred students from Silchar, Tezpur and Guwahati participated in the competition.
