Guwahati; May 19: Gauhati University vice-chancellor Okhil Kumar Medhi, who was admitted to the city’s GNRC Hospital yesterday, is not out of danger.

“He is not out of danger and has been kept under constant observation. However, his respiration has become stable and he is able to talk,” Mrinal Ali Hazarika, public relations officer of the hospital, said.

Medhi is in the ICCU of the hospital and is being treated by the entire team of the cardiology department, headed by A.K. Boro.

Hazarika said Medhi had suffered from breathing difficulty and nosebleed. “We cannot say when he will be discharged,” he said.

On Tuesday night, Medhi went to placate the boarders of the AT3 girls’ hostel, who were agitated over lack of proper security measures in the hostel compound. Unable to bear strong rebukes from the students, the vice-chancellor fainted on the spot at 11pm. He was rushed to the city’s Sanjivani Hospital, but was subsequently referred to GNRC Hospital.

The boarders of the hostel were angry as the university authorities failed to deploy four additional security guards following an incident in which an intruder sneaked into the hostel compound with a knife and frightened the girls in the wee hours on Tuesday.

On the other hand, the university authorities have started initial work of separating the four blocks of the hostel with iron grilles and increasing the heights of the boundary walls as demanded by the boarders. Yesterday, four halogen lights were installed on the hostel campus.

“Now the university authorities have deployed four security guards for the hostel. Two of them will guard the hostel from 2pm to 10pm and the other two will be on duty from 10pm to 6am everyday,” Susmita Kalita, assistant prefect of the hostel, said.

“Work is under way on the boundary walls. Some people are working inside the compound to put up the grilles,” she said.

A GU official today said the university would take all possible measures to ensure security at the girls’ hostels. “We will see that the boarders get the required security guards,” the official said.
