Tura, May 10: The officials of central excise and service tax in collaboration with taxation department of Meghalaya today sensitised the traders of Garo hills in Tura on Goods and Services Tax (GST), which will roll out from July 1.

"We have been educating the traders across Meghalaya so that it becomes easy for them to migrate to the new tax regime," said L. Beimopha, joint commissioner, central excise and service tax commissionerate, Shillong.

He told the gathering that the prevailing multi-taxation system across the country is not uniform and GST will put an end to such practice that will benefit the traders as well as the consumers.

"There will be uniformity in price across the country," he said.

Clearing the doubts of the traders, he said the GST regime would usher in smoother transaction. He also explained how businessmen of different categories were going to benefit from GST.

"Small set-ups with a turnover of less than Rs 20 lakh are exempted from GST but those who fall under its regime should know the subtle details of reaping various benefits and concessions," he said.

The officials said the traders could significantly increase their profitability by implementing the GST norms in their business.

Other officials who were present included assistant commissioner of taxes Danny Marak and central excise and service tax assistant commissioner Sanjeet Kumar.
