Kokrajhar, Nov. 13: The United Tribal Organization, Assam, has moved Gauhati High Court against the Oboro Suraksha Samiti.

It has demanded a ban on the Samiti and accused it of working against the indigenous community. It said the termed “Oboro” itself was unconstitutional and communal.

Talking to reporters at Kokrajhar Press Club here today, United Tribal Organization, Assam president Markush Basumatary said they were forced to approach Gauhati High Court after failing to get any positive response from the government of Assam.

“We have sought the intervention of chief minister Tarun Gogoi and even submitted memorandum a few months back demanding a ban on the communal organisations like Oboro Suraksha Samiti and others like Orabha, Omising, Omimasi, Okarbi organisations, which are formed targeting the indigenous communities of the state and working against them. But we did not get any response from the government. So, we decided to approach Gauhati High Court demanding a ban on these anti-tribal organisations,” Basumatary.

He said the organisation had moved Gauhati High Court earlier this month and filed a PIL No. 66/2014 against the unconstitutional and communal organisation Oboro Suraksha Samiti, which was working against the Bodo community.

“We are not against any organisation but we have witnessed that this particular organisation is trying to isolate a particular community. Moreover, the word ‘Oboro’ is itself unconditional. We demanded that any such organisation which are formed targeting a community be banned,” he said.
