Guwahati, July 17: In the spotlight once again after the selection of two players from Assam to represent the country in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, the Assam Lawn Bowling Association (ALBA) today appealed to the state government to develop the sport in the state.

Two women bowlers — Tania Choudhury and Nayanmoni Saikia — have left for Scotland as part of a 10-member squad in the Indian contingent.

The Games will be held from July 23 to August 3.

Choudhury, a student of Assam Engineering College here, had also represented India in the Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010. Saikia, who is an employee with the Assam forest department, is going to participate in the apex event of sport for the first time.

Commonwealth Games is the highest event for lawn bowls, a sport of the nobility.

Apart from Choudhury and Saikia, there were three others from Assam — Ruptu Gogoi, Anand Narzary and Bima Bora — in the final selection camp held in Ranchi and Calcutta.

Gogoi missed a berth in the national squad owing to health problems in the final stages of the trials.

“Both the girls are singles gold medal prospects. They have been national champions for the last two years and I am almost sure that they will win gold medals for India at Glasgow,” ALBA president Durgadas Boro, who is also going to Glasgow as an Indian Olympic Association official, said.

India finished fourth in women’s triples event in the last Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

Meanwhile, the ALBA is going to organise its annual talent search camp at the Sarusajai Sports Complex greens here from July 25 to 29.
