Shillong, Nov. 22: After months of procrastination and uncertainty, the Meghalaya government has finally reconstituted the Meghalaya State Commission for Women and a former legislator been chosen as its chairperson.
In a notification issued yesterday, the government appointed former legislator and incumbent chairperson of the Meghalaya Cooperative Apex Bank Ltd, Roshan Warjri, as the chairperson of the women’s commission, the third since its inception six years ago.
While no vice-chairperson has been appointed, the other members of the commission include Meena Kharkongor, Wimon Tariang, Angela R. Ingty from Tura and Gamchi R. Marak from Williamnagar.
The Meghalaya State Commission for Women is a panel created under the aegis of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women Act, 2005.
The act stipulates that the commission should comprise a chairperson, a vice-chairperson and four members with a fixed tenure of three years.
The second commission, which was constituted in July 2008, was headed by Susanna K. Marak as the chairperson while Rica Lamar held the post of vice-chairperson. Its three-year term ended in July this year. The first commission was led by Biloris Lyndem from 2005 till 2008.
Earlier in the day, while speaking at a function here, chief minister Mukul Sangma said he hoped the women’s commission would be “proactive”.
Sangma, whose government had been at the receiving end for the delay in reconstituting the commission, also announced that a notification had been issued to create the third women’s commission.
The women’s commission cannot, however, enforce its own orders.
