Goalpara: The Garos, living in Assam-Meghalaya border areas, have threatened an agitation after November 15 if their problems are not solved by the Assam government.

On Saturday, several Garo organisations held a meeting at Nishangram near Assam-Meghalaya border and reviewed their condition.

The meeting highlighted the step-motherly treatment of the Assam government in the long-pending demand for the Garo Autonomous District Council (GADC) and the backwardness of their areas because of the negligence of the state government.

"We are facing problems such as lack of road connectivity, health and education issues and no government is paying heed to these. Thus, we have decided to begin a democratic movement unless our demands are heard on or before November 15," said Garo Jatiya Parishad president Thengsil Sangma.

"The Garos have been struggling to form a council like the one given to their tribal brothers - Rabhas - in the form of Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council," stated a press release issued by the Garo National Council.

"The Garo National Union took up the matter with the then chief minister Tarun Gogoi who assured us a solution but the promise remained unfulfilled," added the press release.
