Tezpur, Aug 29: A labourer of Gammon India Ltd died today at Koliabhomora bridge here while working on the second bridge on the Brahmaputra.

Official sources said the two labourers, Rijoy Rabha and Wajai Munda, were working on number 5 pillar when an iron rod crashed on their safety lines.

As a result both of them fell into the Brahmaputra.

After a search by other workers and residents of the area for more than an hour in the river, Rabha and Munda were rescued.

However, Rabha, who hailed from Goalpara, died when he was brought to Tezpur Kanaklata civil hospital in a critical condition.

Munda, who hails from Alipurduar in Bengal, is undergoing treatment.

Sonitpur superintendent of police P.P. Singh said the incident occurred around 11.30am.

This is the second incident at the under-construction second bridge.

On August 21, Raminish Kumar, 27, an engineer of the company fell into the river while he was on his way to a pillar.

His body was recovered four days later near Singri under Dhekiajuli police station after a team of river police and SDRF conducted an intensive search operation.

Kumar was a resident of Nalanda Barnaripur in Bihar and he was working with the construction company for more than a year.

An official of the Gammon Construction, Srikant Tiwari, said the company had earlier met the workers and asked them to take safety measures.
