Guwahati: A BJP legislator in Assam on Thursday accused the central committee of the Asam Sahitya Sabha of taking away all donations given by the state government and other corporate bodies to hold the Burhidihing-Bordumsa biennial session in February.

Suren Phukan, the MLA from Digboi constituency who made the accusation, was the working president of the reception committee for the Burhidihing-Bordumsa session.

He said the reception committee is under debt of around Rs 40 lakh.

"The central committee of the Sabha had taken away all donations given by Oil India Ltd and the state government. The other donations had also been deposited in the bank account of Sabha's central committee. I think the state government from now onwards should give the donations directly to the reception committees," Phukan told reporters here.

Phukan's accusation came days after another BJP MLA, Mrinal Hazarika, demanded state government's intervention into the Sabha's affairs saying that it (the Sabha) has lost its national character and becoming more festival-oriented.

He said there was more politics in the Sabha than in a political party.

"We were in a lot of trouble as all the funds were taken away by the central committee. We were not given a single penny," Phukan said.

Sabha president Paramananda Rajbongshi told The Telegraph that Phukan was lying.

"It is a lie. Maybe Phukan has some interest behind the lie. The central committee of the Sabha has not received any money meant for the reception committee," he said.
