Tinsukia, Jan. 30: Four persons, including a nine-year-old, were killed and four seriously injured when the car they were travelling in rammed into a truck on National Highway 38 in Tinsukia district last night.
The accident took place near Tingrai railway station on the outskirts of Digboi, around 30km from Tinsukia town.
The officer-in-charge of Digboi police station, Mahesh Bora, told The Telegraph that a white Maruti car, bearing registration number AS 12E 0003 and travelling towards Dibgoi, hit a Bolero (registration number AS 23AC 5084) which was parked by the side of the road, before ramming into the truck which was coming from opposite direction.
"The impact of the accident was so severe that the car, which was carrying eight persons, turned upside down," Bora said.
The deceased have been identified as Ajay Periwal, 40, his son Arpit, 9, Atish Tanti, 27, and Raj Tanti, 24.
Ajay, his family members and others were returning from Ajay's in-laws' residence in Dibrugarh.
His mother-in-law and her domestic help were accompanying him.
The condition of the injured - Soniya Periwal, 35, wife of Ajay, their son Tejas, 5, Meena Agarwal, 55, mother-in-law of Ajay, and her house-maid Putuli Proja, 16, - is said to be critical.
All the four injured have been admitted to Tinsukia civil hospital.
