Tezpur, July 29: Floodwaters of the Satrang and Solengi rivers have affected over 5,000 people of Gohpur subdivision in Sonitpur district of central Assam.

According to official sources, 15 villages in the subdivision have been affected so far.

The floods have been triggered by the heavy rain that occurred in the catchment areas of neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh last week. The water level has been rising since then.

Four houses near the Satrang have so far been washed away.

The families of Anil Saikia, Oli Hazarika, Babul Hazarika and Ram Saikia have been left homeless by the floods.

The areas affected by the deluge are Satrang, Milanpur, Rupnagar, Collegeguri, Natun Satrang, Soteachuk and Gohpur town.

Business establishments in Gohpur town are under water with an embankment breached by the floodwaters.

Sonitpur deputy commissioner Lalit Gogoi told The Telegraph that the water level in the four rivers, including the Satrang and Solengi, invariably rise after heavy rain.

He said the district administration has set up a control room at Gohpur and a rescue team has been engaged.

“Most of the roads have been either totally or partially damaged by the floodwaters in the subdivision,” a resident said.

Sources said many embankments have been eroded and approaches of bridges and culverts damaged.
