Guwahati, Aug. 8: Great Wall of Guwahati, a documentary based on an ancient brick wall on Narakaxur hills in the city, has won the third position at the 12 Months Film Festival in Romania.
The nine minutes and 43 seconds documentary produced by Ri-Mita Bolsabi, a production house, was made by city-based surgeon Satyakam Phukan. "This is a great day because #12MFF has the honor to announce that your movie, Great Wall of Guwahati, just won the 3rd place in Documentary of the Month category of our July Edition! (sic)," Alexandru Vlad, director of 12 Months Film Festival, wrote to Phukan in an email.
The film shows the remains of an extensive ancient wall along the crest of the Narakaxur hills, possibly of some ancient fortification.
A five-member group led by Phukan had visited the site starting from the west of the television tower in Bhangagarh right up to Birubari after hearing about the archaeological remains from late Prabhat Malla Barua, an elderly resident of Uzan Bazar, in March and found the ruins of the brick structure.
They documented the wall and later wrote to the Assam directorate of the Archaeological Survey of India, urging it to undertake systematic exploration of the ruins. They said the extensive ruins were never explored - neither during the British era nor in Independent India.
Phukan told The Telegraph that he was happy that his film has succeeded in bagging an award. "But I will be happier if the authorities concerned start working to explore the wall and preserve it," he said.
