Guwahati: Gauhati High Court has asked the special investigation team, constituted by Assam police to investigate the lynching of two youths in Karbi Anglong, to carry out the probe expeditiously so that the accused can be tried by a fast-track court.

"We hope and trust that SIT will complete the investigation soon and file the chargesheet without delay for expeditious trial of the wrongdoers by a fast-track court," a bench of Chief Justice Ajit Singh and Justice Mir Alfaz Ali said on Tuesday in its order on a suo motu public interest litigation (PIL) filed in connection with the incident.

Nilotpal Das and Abhijit Nath of Guwahati were lynched by a mob in Karbi Anglong district on June 8 on suspicion of being child-lifters.

The state government, in its affidavit filed in the high court earlier, had said the SIT has been formed with efficient officers, more than 30 people have been arrested for the lynching and 47 people for misuse of social media.

The court said the affidavit was, however, silent on the steps taken by the government to prevent mob lynching, especially of Jhankar Saikia, a BA first-year student of Diphu College, on June 25, 2013. A group of auto drivers had killed Jhankar at Diphu in Karbi Anglong after he reportedly refused to pay Rs 30 when the legitimate fare was Rs 20.

It directed the government to file an affidavit, giving details of the security measures taken for visitors to Karbi Anglong.

The PIL will be listed on July 16 for next hearing.

Nilotpal's father Gopal Chandra Das and Abhijit's father Ajit Kumar Nath met chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal in Dispur on Tuesday and requested him to ensure an expeditious investigation and maximum punishment to the culprits.

Sonowal assured them that he was personally monitoring the case and no stone would be left unturned to punish the culprits.
