Tezpur, Oct. 21: An elephant was electrocuted this morning at Amerabari near a paddy field under Rangapara police station in Sonitpur district.

Official sources said a herd of four elephants from the Sonitpur elephant reserve had been roaming last night in search of food.

While returning, one of the elephants was electrocuted by an 11KV electric wire, which was hanging low, along the Balipara-Misamari stretch.

The place is nearly 30km from Tezpur town and 210km from the state capital Guwahati.

According to Sonitpur West division DFO Narayan Mahanta, the four wild elephants were pushed back by forest officials.

Earlier, three wild elephants were electrocuted in Borgang under Sonitpur East division two years ago.

Mahanta said an official inquiry has been conducted to ascertain if there has been any negligence by forest staff and if any legal action needs to be taken.

He said a veterinary doctor completed the post-mortem.
