Double crowns for Pallav, Anjali

Guwahati, May 9: Pallav Deka and Anjali Kalita of Guwahati clinched double crowns in the all-Assam open ranking badminton championship that concluded at Kanaklata Indoor Stadium here today.

Pallav annexed the titles in both the men?s singles and doubles categories, while Anjali won the women?s and under-19 girls? singles crowns. Pallav defeated city-mate Ankur Baruah 17-15, 15-9 in the singles final after partnering Amitabh Goswami in the doubles win over Ankur and Rajeev Goswami 15-11, 5-15, 15-12.

Pallav last night beat Rajeev 15-12, 15-6, while Ankur got the better of Pankaj Rajkhowa 15-8, 15-3 in the singles semi-finals.

Anjali completed her double win this afternoon, defeating Rimi Hazarika of Guwahati 11-6, 11-1 in the women?s singles final. She beat Dibrugarh opponent Pizza Bharali 11-1, 11-2 last night for the under-19 girls? singles title.

Parikhit Bhagawati of Dibrugarh claimed the under-19 boys? singles crown, beating Rohan Chaliha of Guwahati 15-7, 15-8 in the final last evening.

In under-13 boys? doubles, the Rajeeb Barooah-Jayanta Madhab Saikia duo of Sivasagar came back from behind to defeat Jorhat?s Abhisekh Phukan and Priyanuz Duarah 13-15, 15-4, 15-10.

Uddipta Baruah and Ankuman Gogoi of Dibrugarh got the better of Sivasagar opponents Nikhilesh Sarma and Anshuman Bora 15-4, 15-7 to win the under-16 boys? doubles crown.

Earlier, Rana Kumar Baruah (Sivasagar) and Pooja Bharali (Dibrugarh) claimed the under-10 boys? and girls? singles titles respectively.

Abhisekh Phukan of Jorhat and Rituparna Kalita of Guwahati won the under-13 singles titles, while Hirakjyoti Neog (Dibrugarh) and Meghna Bharadwaj (Jorhat) bagged the under-16 singles crowns.

Olympian Dipankar Bhattacharjee, Guwahati Sports Association president Rana Goswami, former state shuttler Pradip Chaliha, Assam Badminton Association secretary Omar Rashid and others were present at the prize-distribution and closing ceremony.
