Dhemaji, Jan. 20: Activists of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) today blocked seven trucks carrying construction material to the Lower Subansiri hydel project at Gogamukh, around 25km from this town.

The dam site is at Gerukamukh in Upper Assam's Dhemaji district.

"The continuation of construction of the Lower Subansiri hydel project has caused strong resentment among the people of Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts prompting the AJYCP action," general secretary of the union's Lakhimpur district unit, Niren Baruah, told The Telegraph over phone.

"The clandestine construction came to light when our team comprising members of the AJYCP Lakhimpur and Dhemaji units along with central leaders went to the site on January 6 after taking permission from the Dhemaji district administration. Despite security personnel obstructing the team, it managed to reach the spot and noticed that construction was in progress and three turbines had already reached the site," he said.

Baruah said a meeting held on January 7 decided to impose an indefinite blockade on movement of material to the site. Baruah accused the NHPC, which is constructing the dam, of defying a central government assurance not to go ahead with work.

He alleged that the BJP-led governments at the Centre and state were not bothered about the people. He cautioned the authorities against ignoring the people. "The agitation will continue till work stops completely. We will not allow any vehicle to enter the site till our problems are addressed."
