Guwahati, April 3: The Assam PCC today slammed the state government's allegedly "anti-people" move to hike power tariff in the state by 6 per cent from April 10.

This is the second increase since the BJP came to power in May last year. In December, the Assam Power Distribution Corporation Limited increased 59 paise per unit.

Assam PCC spokesperson Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya said the ruling BJP-led allia-nce was not keeping the pl-edges it made to the people before the 2016 Assembly polls.

"The Narendra Modi-led BJP government had promised 24-hour power supply and Sarbananda Sonowal echoed it to the people of the state. But after taking over the reins of the government, he forgot his promise. The load of Rs 55 crore dues to the Assam Electricity Regulatory Commission is being thrust on the people. The hike in power tariff will affect all, from those consuming 0.5KW to those who consume 20KW per month. This is all because of lack of proper policies of the BJP government," Bhattacharya said.

"Slogans like jati, mati, beti are of no use if the government does not understand the plight of the people. The Congress had provided free electricity in the rural areas and to the poor. But this government does not make distinction."

Electricity generation should be increased to make up for the shortfall in supply. Even the people living in the city are forced to undergo load- shedding for five to six hours every day. Is this a sign of change," he added.
