Kokrajhar, May 10: Intensifying their agitation against the Delimitation Commission’s proposal to de-reserve the Kokrajhar parliamentary seat, hundreds of activists from several Bodo organisations, led by the All Bodo Students’ Union (Absu), today laid siege to national highways 31 B and C in Lower Assam.
The same organisations had blocked rail traffic yesterday, forcing Northeast Frontier Railway to suspend all trains on the route. Train services resumed this afternoon, but activists blocked the highways in Gossaigaon and Karigaon in Kokrajhar, Kashikotra and Bijni in Chirang and Supharighat in Dhubri district.
Besides paralysing the public transport system, the 12-hour road blockade left heavy vehicles carrying goods to the Northeast stranded on the Assam-Bengal border since 6 am. Traffic flow on all roads from West Bengal to Assam via Srirampur and Boxirhat was affected. The organisations behind the agitation include the Bodo Sahitya Sabha, All Bodo Women’s We-lfare Federation, and the Bodo People’s Progressive Front.
