Agartala: Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb said on Friday that highrise buildings would be developed in the state though parts of the state fall in high earthquake prone seismic zone V.

Speaking at an event of the State Disaster Management Authority here, Deb said he had approached several agencies for more investment in Tripura but they were reluctant because of land shortage.

"Development is a must and land is a pre-requisite for that. We have shortage of land in Tripura and that is why we should adopt modern construction technology from advanced countries like Japan," the chief minister said.

He said his government was planning to develop 10-storied or even taller buildings in the days to come to accommodate the housing requirements of homeless people.

Deb stressed on transfer of light-weight and disaster-resistant construction engineering technology from Japan, which, he said, is a "friendly nation".

He said he wants to develop Agartala, which was not planned in a scientific way, on the lines of Chandigarh.

"There is no proper road network and sewerage system here. The central government has allotted funds to us to develop Agartala into a smart city but there is almost no space for work. I can't turn Agartala into Chandigarh instantly," he added.

Deb lauded Israel for its progress in modern technology and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had taken a landmark step in visiting the middle-east nation.

He said technology transfer from Israel would help India battle agrarian crisis and disaster management.
