Guwahati, May 7: The Union ministry of environment and forests has asked the Assam Science Technology and Environment Council to prepare a report for solving the environmental problems of the state.
Sources said the state government had mooted the idea of preparing a similar report, but scrapped the plan due to shortage of funds. The Pollution Control Board of Assam (PCBA) had prepared an environment report. However, it is gathering dust due to non-implementation.
Director of the council, A.K. Baruwa, said the report would carry an environment atlas of the state with geological, geographical and geomorphological maps as well as details about its flora and fauna. Though the project was completed, its report was not printed due to paucity of funds. Since the government has now assured of financial assistance, the atlas should be ready very soon, Baruwa said.
The report would have a video photo-catalogue on the state’s environmental problems and an interactive compact disc. Baruwa is confident that the council would finish the project ahead of time since it has done substantial work on it.
