Jan. 23: A leading management entrance training centre will conduct a mock test on Sunday to prepare aspiring managers for the Common Admission Test (CAT).

Suman Das, a commerce graduate who will appear for the CAT for the first time this year, said, “Mere preparation for the CAT is futile unless you know where you stand at the macro level. Such mock exams will prepare us for the real test ahead.”

Her friend, Mohit Agarwal, agreed. “The CAT is highly competitive and it is only such all-India mock tests that can give the students a feel of the actual experience and open his or her eyes to the real competition. It is easy to be complacent when one is well prepared. To clear CAT and get through to the leading business schools of the country one has to be not only well prepared, but have the edge as well,” he said.

The simulation test will be conducted by one of the leading management entrance training institutes of the country, the IMS Learning Resources. IMS has arrived the city with a free test that will enable CAT candidates to gauge their performances and find out where they stand.

Two mock tests, called Sim CATs, will be held — on Sunday for CAT 2003 and on February 8 for CAT 2004-05.

“The Sim CAT is an all-India CAT that simulates all conditions of an actual CAT, the areas it tests and the level of difficulty,” said Gaurav Khemka, who heads the IMS Guwahati team with another professional, Harsh Khemka.

The Sim CAT will provide the candidates with all-India ranking and percentile score calculated by the same optical scanning method of OMR sheets used by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM).

“Aspirants here will get the opportunity to assess their rank among 40,000 students, 500 of whom will be from the city itself,” added Khemka.

The Sim-CAT plans to release results within 48 hours.

Sunday’s test will be followed by a free group discussion and personal interview orientation by an alumnus of the prestigious Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi.

Lauding such test training programmes, A. Datta, an executive of a Guwahati-based multinational, said, “Platforms for launching bright careers are coming up in a big way in the city. Such opportunities were absent earlier.”

Sim CAT comes close on the heels of the announcement that the Frankfinn Institute of Air Hostess Training, which trains aspirants to join the hospitality and travel sectors, will set up shop in the city.

The United States Educational Foundation in India (USEFI) has organised a two-day outreach programme in the city from Tuesday for people wishing to pursue higher studies in America.

As part of the schedule, the USEFI will offer “mentoring services” for the Northeast candidates.
