Imphal, Sept. 24: Normalcy is returning to Charhazari Sadar Hills in Manipur’s Senapati district, which was rocked by violence during the panchayat elections held on September 19.
The supporters of the Sadar Hills District Demand Committee and Kuki Students Organisation had disrupted polling and allegedly set on fire five kiosks at Charhazari on polling day.
The two Kuki organisations were objecting to the holding of panchayat elections in Sadar Hills, saying that the area already has one autonomous district council for local administration.
The government, however, maintained that the autonomous district council administration did not cover Charhazari and panchayat elections were being held there for several years.
Repolling was held in four polling stations in Charhazari on September 21 under heavy security.
There was no violence that day, but no votes were cast at two of the polling stations for the panchayat elections.
Police and a company of India Reserve Battalion, led by Senapati superintendent of police Nishit Kumar Ujjwal, are patrolling the area.
