Guwahati, Oct. 5: George Telegraph, Calcutta, will return after a long gap while Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) Ltd, Mumbai, will stage their debut when the Guwahati Sports Association (GSA) will host its flagship event, the Lokapriya Bordoloi Trophy football tournament at Nehru Stadium here from Tuesday.
J.K. Bora, president of GSA, said the participation of both the outfits were confirmed. He added that it would “add charm to the prestigious tournament”.
Subrata Dutta, president of George Telegraph, has confirmed the participation of both the teams.
George Telegraph will be staging their return to Nehru Stadium after a gap of nearly four decades.
The Calcuttans had last participated in the 1960s but never lifted the title.
The newly-formed Mumbai-based ONGC outfit will comprise certain big names in the Indian circuit, including internationals, in its ranks. Assam’s Bilifung Narzary will also be in the team.
However, the GSA’s bid to rope in some Goa outfits and Calcutta giants Mohun Bagan had to be aborted in view of the ongoing Santosh Trophy tournament as most of the big names in the clubs were representing their respective states in the apex national meet, Bora said.
“We have a plan to rope in some of the best outfits of the country in next year’s edition to mark the GSA’s golden jubilee celebrations,” Bora said.
He added that some of the other leading oufits from outside the state who are likely to participate in the tournament are Tata Football Academy, Mohun Bagan Football Academy, Steel Authority of India Ltd, Calcutta and Jamshedpur and Lajong Sports Club of Shillong.
The Bordoloi Trophy tournament will be held completely under floodlights this time.
Some of the matches of the tournament were held under floodlights in the past couple of years.
Regarding a clash of dates with the ongoing S.P. Barooah Challenger Trophy cricket tournament, Bora said it has been worked out with the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) and the Board of Sports of Assam (BSA) to make it convenient for both the games.
R.P. Baruah, BSA officer on special duty, said the ground was allotted to the ACA on condition that the schedules will have to be adjusted in such a way that the Bordoloi Trophy tournament was not affected.
Baruah added that the ACA had preponed its final match to October 7 to 9. It was earlier scheduled for October 11 to 13.
