Silchar, July 24: Cachar police today rescued a 20-year-old married woman from a brothel on Radhamadhab road here.
The police conducted a raid in the area around 10am and rescued the woman from the house where she was held captive for months. The police arrested the landlord, Arun Kumar Saha, 50, an alleged flesh trader and a goon.
Sources said the woman, who is a resident of South Katwa in Nagaon district, used to work in a brick factory at Lumding with her husband Abu Sama, 30. A few months ago, her husband asked her to accompany him on a trip to Silchar and the couple came here on March 10.
The woman’s statement reveals that her husband, along with two unknown men, sedated her and sold her to Saha who forced her into flesh trade.
“I managed to get hold of a cell phone from a customer and called up my relatives back home and told them about my location. They informed the local police,” the woman said.
The officer-in-charge of Sadar police station here said, “We are on the look out for the woman’s husband and the two unidentified men.”
Recently, two Nepali girls were also rescued from the area.
Reports suggest that trafficking of woman in Cachar and neighbouring districts is increasing at an alarming pace.
Former Cachar deputy commissioner Harendra Kumar Deb Mahanta had earlier taken the initiative to clamp down on the red-light areas of the town with job assurances to sex workers.
The present district authority appears to have kept the idea aside for the time being.
